TOM SWOPE GALLERY

About Tom Swope

Educated at Harvard College (1980) Tom started his career working for Matthias Komor in New York City just before he retired. It was there that he learned the business of the buying and selling of ancient art across a wide range of fields. After Mr. Komor retired, Tom worked for Robert Miller Gallery where he was also exposed to the contemporary art world at the highest level, and dealt in classical antiquities for Bob as that was one of his personal passions. Offered an opportunity to create his own gallery of ancient art by Asher Edelman, Tom created Daedalus gallery which opened in 1989, and a few years later went on his own as a private dealer. Later in 2000 Tom moved to Hudson New York and opened a gallery on Warren Street in 2008 until he moved to Merida in 2019. It was during those years that he moved from dealing in Greek and Roman art to a focus on early Chinese Buddhist sculpture and Archaic Chinese jades. Upon moving to Merida, he brought a part of his collection with him and he feels it should be seen by the interested public. Tom thinks that there is value in seeing the art of other cultures and times, and there are connections and similarities that we cannot as of yet explain.
